A Word about Boring Heads

I was going to post this on a forum, and did, but then I read the rest of the thread and saw that the OP had already bought a boring head and my post was useless, so I'm jotting it down here for my very few followers (if any) or for suture reference.

"A boring head can be a very good project. Learning to mill fairly accurate sideways is a great exercise in fitment and measuring.

You can make them with dovetails, box ways, or even a non-retaining slide like tongue-and-groove flooring. You can put a dial on the leadscrew, or just use a machine screw like I made mine. You get a feel for adjustment after awhile, even without a dial.

Here are some good articles about homemade boring heads:

http://anotherairgunblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/making-barrel-band-for-my-qb77.html (This one is of an unusual design, I also follow his blog, he posts many machining related projects with his Taig machines)

http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/showthread.php?t=7703/#3 (notice the knurled "speed winder" knob like a micrometer has)

http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/51879-Shop-made-Boring-heads#5 (A cool one! This simply made version acts like a boring and facing tool)

Many more out there, hundreds can be readily found on google. featuring many designs."
